Scout Smith, a 1990s standout for the Wolfpack basketball team, has been appointed as the new varsity volleyball coach at Coupeville High School, taking the reins of the girls’ basketball program as well.
A Dual Coaching Commitment
After a decade away from the sidelines, Smith returns to the school where she once captained multiple sports, bringing a fresh perspective to two programs that have shown measurable progress in recent seasons.
The school board’s approval marks the culmination of a season in which the basketball team improved both defensively and offensively, a development Smith attributes to the players’ hard work and talent.
She expressed gratitude to her predecessor, Megan Richter, whose tenure she filled during maternity leave, and highlighted the collaborative support she received from Brad Sherman, head coach of the boys’ basketball program.
Legacy in the Smith Family
Smith’s coaching lineage extends beyond her own career; her father, Chris Smith, and brothers, CJ and Hunter, have all contributed to Coupeville’s athletic teams, while her mother, Charlotte Young, once led Central Whidbey Little League softball squads to success.
Reflecting on her own high school days, Smith noted that she played volleyball, basketball and softball while serving as captain of each, and later earned degrees from the University of Washington and Gonzaga before returning to teach at her alma mater.
Looking ahead, she is eager to build on the program’s momentum, emphasizing continued growth and the importance of community support in achieving the team’s goals.
