Sean Walsh is back in New England, taking on an assistant coaching role with the University of Connecticut’s men’s ice hockey team after spending the previous season with Alaska‑Fairbanks. The move brings a familiar face to the region, where Walsh previously honed his craft in various hockey environments.
His coaching journey began as a video coordinator and statistical analyst at the University of Maine, progressed to leading the University of New England’s Nor’easters to a record‑setting season, and included a tenure at Bowdoin College. Across the USHL, NCAA Division I and III, Walsh accumulated a breadth of experience that now positions him to contribute to UConn’s player development and strategic planning.
A Family Legacy Meets a New Challenge
Walsh replaces Nick Peruzzi, who departed for a position at the University of Wisconsin, and will be charged with helping the Huskies build on a 20‑13‑5 campaign that earned them a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Their run ended with a 2‑1 loss to Michigan State in the regional semifinal, a result that underscores both the potential and the gaps the program seeks to address.
Adding Walsh also revives a family connection to the sport; his father, Shawn Walsh, was a longtime head coach at Maine who guided the Black Bears to an NCAA championship. That lineage brings a deep‑rooted understanding of the game and a commitment to excellence that aligns with UConn’s ambitions as they look to rebound in the upcoming season.
