Seattle Parks and Recreation has kicked off a new summer initiative called "Summer of Soccer," inviting families to roam the city’s green spaces with a mobile game that blends augmented reality, soccer challenges and local history. The campaign, which runs through July 19, transforms ordinary park visits into a quest where participants complete soccer‑themed tasks, earn digital badges and compete against other municipalities.
A Tech‑Driven Quest for All Ages
The free Agents of Discovery app leverages augmented reality and geo‑tracking to guide players through each park. As users move through the landscape, AI‑powered avatars — such as a honeybee, river otter and blue heron — appear on screen, offering clues, trivia and encouragement. This interactive layer turns a simple walk into a dynamic learning experience that merges physical activity with digital storytelling.
Learning Through Play and Competition
Beyond the fun of chasing virtual soccer balls, the program aims to keep children moving, curious and engaged with their surroundings. Nicole Parish‑Andrews, an environmental education specialist with Seattle Parks, explains that the campaign seeks to "get people outdoors" while highlighting Seattle’s natural landscapes and cultural opportunities. By integrating local history and ecology into the challenges, the initiative hopes to foster a deeper appreciation for the city’s environment.
The effort also taps into a broader tradition of outdoor recreation excellence. Agents of Discovery was honored with the 2020 Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals Excellence Award, underscoring its credibility as an educational tool. With the campaign slated to conclude on July 19, Seattle residents have a limited window to explore, compete and share their experiences, potentially inspiring similar programs in other cities.
