Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirmed on Tuesday that they have transferred midfielder Sebastian Berhalter to Championship side Middlesbrough FC, with the transaction reported to be worth approximately $2 million.
Berhalter, a 25‑year‑old United States international, leaves MLS after six and a half seasons in which he helped the Whitecaps secure four consecutive Canadian Championship titles and guide the club to both the MLS Cup and the Concacaf Champions Cup finals.
A New Chapter in England
During his tenure, Berhalter emerged as a pivotal figure, leading the team with 13 goal contributions — six goals and seven assists — in the most recent campaign and becoming the first MLS player to register a goal and an assist in a World Cup match.
Axel Schuster, Whitecaps sporting director, said the club is grateful for Berhalter’s hard work and dedication, highlighting his contributions to the squad’s recent successes and wishing him well in the next phase of his career.
At Middlesbrough, the midfielder will join fellow former Columbus Crew player Aidan Morris, while the club also fields former Charlotte FC centre‑back Adilson Malanda, adding depth to a defensive lineup that aims to push for promotion.
Berhalter took to social media to thank the fans, staff, coaches, management and teammates, describing Vancouver as his home for the past four and a half years and expressing excitement for the new challenge ahead.
His international résumé includes five caps at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a Gold Cup triumph in 2025, and a growing presence alongside midfield stalwarts such as Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Malik Tillman.
