The Utah Mammoth announced this week that they have acquired goaltender Sebastian Cossa from the Detroit Red Wings, a move that adds a seasoned netminder to a young franchise eager to cement its presence in the Western Conference.
Cossa, a native of Hamilton, Ontario, but raised in the oil-rich town of Fort McMurray, Alberta, grew up skating on frozen lakes before emerging as one of the most reliable prospects in the Western Hockey League.
WHL dominance and championship pedigree
His junior career peaked with the Edmonton Oil Kings, where over three seasons he posted a 2.12 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage and 14 shutouts, helping the club capture the 2022 WHL Championship in his second year with the team.
Selected 15th overall by the Red Wings in the 2020 draft, Cossa turned professional the following season, logging 46 games for the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL and three appearances with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL before earning his first NHL call-up.
On December 9, 2024, he made his NHL debut for Detroit, stopping 12 of 14 shots and securing his first win between the pipes, a performance that hinted at the steady hand he could bring to Utah's crease.
International play has also marked his resume; Cossa was a member of Canada's gold-medal squad at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship and represented the country at the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
