A Deep Conference
The SEC’s preseason All‑SEC teams are a snapshot of the conference’s relentless talent pool, and they often leave even the most accomplished Volunteers on the sidelines.
DeSean Bishop, who finished fifth in the league in rushing yards per game last season, is among the players whose contributions are frequently eclipsed by more headline‑grabbing names.
At the receiving corps, Braylon Staley and Mike Matthews each amassed over 800 yards last year, yet they were omitted from the third‑team selections, a snub that reflects the sheer depth at wide receiver.
The quarterback position remains a focal point, especially as Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma bring back their starter from a season ago, while Tennessee is still searching for a definitive starter under center.
Defensively, the Volunteers’ linebackers posted impressive tackle numbers, with Edwin Spillman, Jeremiah Campbell and Arion Carter each surpassing 76 stops, and the addition of Penn State transfer Amare Campbell, who logged 103 tackles for the Nittany Lions, deepens the rotation.
In the secondary, cornerback Ty Redmond’s strong performance has not gone unnoticed, and sophomore offensive tackle David Sanders, who missed the first four games due to a shoulder injury, earned freshman All‑American honors after proving his mettle on the line.
The competition is further amplified by the influx of top running backs from the transfer portal, as Texas secured Hollywood Smothers and Raleek Brown, while Arizona State’s Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo and Mario Craver also loom as threats.
With a roster that includes names such as Lane Kiffin, Sam Leavitt, George MacIntyre, Faizon Brandon and John Adams, the Volunteers are poised to challenge the conventional rankings and make a statement early in the season.
