SEC Sues LSU and Coach Lane Kiffin Over Alleged Recruiting of Professional Athletes

Legal battle intensifies as conference seeks to enforce rules amid broader NCAA eligibility debates

SEC’s Accusations

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has filed a lawsuit against Louisiana State University (LSU) and its leadership, naming university president Wade Rousse, vice president Verge Ausberry and head coach Lane Kiffin as defendants.

According to the complaint, LSU allegedly recruited professional athletes under contracts with the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers to participate in the 2026‑27 college football season, a move the conference says breaches its regulations.

In a brief submitted on Wednesday, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey argued that the conference must be able to enforce its rules, noting a unanimous 15‑0 vote among SEC presidents to adopt stricter compliance measures, while Rousse recused himself from the decision.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill criticized the NCAA’s evolving eligibility framework, saying the changes affect universities, student‑athletes and administrators, and she warned that the lawsuit could set a precedent for how college sports are governed.

The legal action follows a separate effort by professional athletes to obtain a court ruling that would allow them to play football this fall, underscoring a broader contest over NCAA eligibility rules and their impact on higher education.

If successful, the case could reshape the landscape of college athletics, forcing institutions to reassess how they interact with professional players and potentially tightening the SEC’s regulatory authority.
