Section 1 Baseball Tournament Recap
The opening round of the Section 1 baseball tournament delivered drama on both the Class 4A and Class 2A fronts. Mayo, representing the Spartans, edged Owatonna 7-5 in a back-and-forth contest that hinged on a two-out, two-strike single by Brennan Bakken. Mason Hinchley contributed three hits, helping the Spartans pull away in the later innings.
In a contrasting display of dominance, Farmington’s right-hander Brodie Gibart turned in a no-hitter against John Marshall, striking out 18 batters and securing a 4-0 victory. The performance underscored the Tigers’ pitching depth heading into the next round.
Lake City continued its hot streak, posting a 10-0 win over Lourdes. Noah Meyer went 3-for-4, driving in three runs while also stealing a base and scoring a run. The Tigers collected 14 hits, overwhelming the opposition.
Winona Cotter edged Pine Island 3-2 in a tightly contested game. The narrow margin kept the Cotter squad alive and set up a semifinal showdown with Lake City.
