A New Era for Section 2 Football
As the new high school football season approaches, five Section 2 programs have announced a move from the traditional 11‑player format to an eight‑man game. The decision stems from low participation numbers and safety concerns, reflecting a broader trend among smaller schools across the state.
The shift leaves only two full‑size teams in Class D — Greenwich and Canajoharie/Fort Plain — who will now compete in Class C based on geography. This reclassification alters the competitive landscape and forces a redistribution of matchups across the division.
Section 2 football coordinator Sean Colfer explained that the committee prioritized preserving homecoming traditions and balancing home and away contests. While most teams will enjoy a fair spread of games, a few schools will face tighter travel schedules as a result of the realignment.
To accommodate the new eight‑man teams, the schedule was restructured so they primarily face one another, with occasional match‑ups created by borrowing bye weeks from playoff‑eligible eight‑man squads. Importantly, the newcomers will not be eligible for postseason play, a restriction that will shape their competitive approach early in the season.
The season is slated to open on September 4 and 5, giving teams a brief window to adjust to the new format. Officials say the priority remains minimizing disruption for student‑athletes while keeping the spirit of local rivalries alive, even as the league navigates uneven game distributions.
