A Growing Hub for High School Basketball
The Section 7 Basketball Team Camp in Mesa has become a marquee event for high school hoops, drawing 176 teams from across the state to the Arizona Athletic Grounds. After relocating from Glendale, the facility now serves as a central stage where prospects catch the eye of college recruiters.
Among the standout performers was Trey Terry of Basha High School, whose recent showcase drew praise from coaches and parents alike. His father, Al Terry, highlighted how the camp provides a rare opportunity for local players to be seen on a national stage.
Economic and Athletic Impact
The tournament’s economic footprint is substantial, with officials estimating a $70 million impact on the local community. In addition, about $30 million in college athletic scholarships are awarded each year to participants, underscoring the pathway the event creates for aspiring student‑athletes.
Mo Kirby, director of basketball at Arizona Athletic Grounds, said the camp’s reputation continues to rise, positioning the venue as the premier destination for scholastic basketball in the region.
Nikki Bolich, executive director of the Arizona Entertainment and Sports Commission, emphasized the camp’s significance, noting that it not only fuels athletic dreams but also generates $4 million in sales‑tax revenue for the state each year.
Next weekend, girls’ teams will take the spotlight, chasing their own collegiate aspirations and further enriching the camp’s diverse showcase.
