The New York State Sportswriters Association has announced its Class AA co‑player of the year, honoring Rich Roohan of Cornwall as one of the state's most outstanding backstops. Roohan’s selection reflects not only his individual brilliance but also the growing prominence of Section 9 talent on the statewide stage.
Section 9 schools contributed 41 all‑state honorees across the AA, A, B, C and D divisions, underscoring the region’s depth and competitiveness. Dutchess County institutions, in particular, accounted for four of those selections, a testament to the sustained excellence of programs in the Mid‑Hudson area.
Statewide Recognition
Chester Academy capped a historic season by capturing the Class B state championship, while Cornwall advanced to the Class AA finals. Both programs were represented on the first team, with Aaden Hershberger joining Roohan among the honorees. Other Section 9 standouts included Shane Finnigan of Roy C. Ketcham, who earned a spot on the Class AAA first team.
The honors extended beyond the headline acts, with multiple players from Monroe‑Woodbury, Marlboro and other local schools receiving second and third team recognitions. Notable mentions include Justin Simon of Liberty and Liam Correa of Marlboro, who were selected for Class A honors, and Brandon Jenkins and James Musco of Chester, who shone in Class B selections.
Additional accolades highlighted the breadth of talent in the region, from Logan Garvey and Warren Lounsbury of Chapel Field and Pine Plains in Class C to Mason Tice of Eldred, who earned a first‑team nod in Class D. The collective achievement of these athletes reflects a vibrant high school baseball ecosystem that continues to produce college‑ready prospects.
