A Record‑Setting Selection
The New York State Sportswriters Association announced the small all‑state teams on May 18, honoring 37 athletes from Class B, C and D across Section V. The group brings the section’s overall all‑state total to 60 players, underscoring the depth of competition in the smaller schools.
Large‑school honorees were released a week earlier on May 11, but the spotlight quickly turned to the remarkable pool of talent among the smallest programs. Schools such as Canisteo‑Greenwood, Hornell and Keshequa each placed three players on the list, reflecting a competitive balance that rivals larger districts.
Falleti’s Historic Campaign
Batavia Notre Dame’s Sofia Falleti was named Class D Player of the Year after guiding her team to a state championship and earning MVP honors in both the sectional and state tournaments. Her performance marked the first time a Section V player has received player‑of‑the‑year recognition in seven years, a milestone that places her among the elite achievers in New York basketball.
Falleti also earned a spot on the All‑Greater Rochester first team, joining 15 other standout athletes. The achievement follows the last player to receive the honor, Alana Fursman of Pittsford Mendon, who was celebrated in 2019, highlighting a rare resurgence of top‑tier talent from the region.
Beyond Falleti, the all‑state lists feature a host of other emerging stars, including Alana Fursman, Jordyn Dyring, Addison Bree, Selena Maldonado and many more. Their selections illustrate a vibrant pipeline of skill and determination that continues to shape girls basketball across Section V.
