Security scares disrupt opening night
Two Pennsylvania high school football games were halted before completion on Friday night as separate security incidents unfolded during the 2026 season opener.
At Wilson High School, a student reported a potential weapon during the match against Governor Mifflin, prompting an immediate investigation that found no weapon. The game, in which Wilson led 48‑7, was stopped with 3 minutes and 22 seconds left in the third quarter.
Minutes later, a shot was fired at Gladiator Stadium during the contest between South Allegheny and Elizabeth Forward, ending the match early. Elizabeth Forward had been ahead 42‑20 when the game was declared final.
No injuries were reported in either incident, and both teams were escorted to their locker rooms while spectators were safely evacuated. South Allegheny School Police apprehended a suspect who had no address within either school district.
David MacDonald, a district official, emphasized that the safety of students, athletes, families, staff and the community was the top priority in both cases.
Governor Mifflin School District and South Allegheny School District each followed established safety protocols, with the former responding to the false weapon report and the latter coordinating the response to the shooting.
The incidents occurred against a backdrop of a delayed schedule due to earlier conflicts, underscoring the challenges of managing crowded venues under heightened alert.

Authorities are reviewing security measures for upcoming games, and both districts have pledged to debrief with families and players. The swift actions of school police and staff were credited with preventing any harm.
