Sena Catterall, a standout dual‑sport athlete, was drafted by PWHL Detroit in the fifth round, 51st overall, marking a decisive shift from baseball to professional hockey.
A New Chapter in a Dual‑Sport Career
Catterall has long been a cornerstone of Canada’s national women’s baseball team, earning the Ashley Stephenson Award in 2023 and being named the Women’s National Team MVP for 2024.
Her accolades include a bronze medal at the 2023 World Cup, a spot on the tournament All‑World Team, and awards for Best Defensive Player, while she led the event in runs scored and stolen bases.
In the recent Americas qualifying series, she went 3‑for‑4 with three RBIs and an inside‑the‑park home run, helping Canada sweep Puerto Rico and secure a berth in the World Cup.
The upcoming group stage will be held in Rockford, Illinois, from July 22‑26, where Canada will face the United States, Hong Kong, Australia, Korea and Mexico.
Transitioning to the ice, Catterall captained Clarkson University this season, posting career‑highs of 19 goals and 37 points in 40 games, and finished with 17 goals and 33 points in 35 games.
PWHL Detroit’s manager Anthony Pluta praised her all‑around skills, noting that her blend of speed, power and defensive acumen will be a major factor for the team.
Instead of returning to baseball in the offseason, Catterall is dedicating her focus entirely to the PWHL, aiming to translate her award‑winning performance onto the hockey rink.
