A community‑driven chase led to the capture of Jonathan Ortiz Espana, who faces multiple serious charges.

Baseball League Members Help Police Nab Suspected Offender

A group of senior baseball players from the Redwood Empire Baseball League’s 72‑and‑older division found themselves thrust into a law‑enforcement operation last week when they assisted Healdsburg police in detaining a man suspected of sexually abusing a 14‑year‑old girl.

The suspect, identified as Jonathan Ortiz Espana, was taken into custody on a slew of allegations including statutory rape, child endangerment, vehicle theft, evading police, driving under the influence and providing alcohol to a minor.

According to investigators, the incident began when a suspicious vehicle occupied by a man and a teenage girl was reported on the streets of Healdsburg. The vehicle led officers on a brief chase before crashing into a street sign, rendering it disabled.

Players and an umpire from the league’s oldest teams confronted the driver, helping to secure him until authorities arrived. Ortiz Espana allegedly approached the girl earlier in town, catcalled her, supplied her with alcohol and attempted to engage in sexual activity inside a stolen car.

With the age of consent in California set at 18, the charges carry serious penalties. Healdsburg Police Department issued a reminder to parents and guardians to maintain open dialogues with teens about personal safety and responsible decision‑making.

Authorities say the investigation remains active, and further details may emerge as the case proceeds through the judicial system.
