A senior standout readies for a breakout year
Dalton Hargraves, a senior wide receiver and defensive back at West Valley High School, enters his final season as one of the most versatile players on the roster, poised to make a major impact on both offense and defense.
Having missed much of his sophomore year due to a knee injury, he used the time to immerse himself in film, dissecting playbooks and mastering route concepts, a habit that has defined his preparation ever since.
Coach Ryan Scott describes Hargraves as a football enthusiast whose grasp of the game borders on obsessive, noting that the player can break down opposing defenses and convey those insights to teammates with clarity.
On defense, Hargraves studies quarterbacks’ tendencies, positioning himself to bait errant throws; the result has been two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, and a knack for disrupting passes even when the ball rarely comes his way.
Offensively, he logged 10 touchdowns last season, catching 56 passes for 923 yards, and the team has built formations and motion packages that keep the ball in his hands, leveraging the speed of quarterback Drayden Birley and the depth of receivers such as Donovan Malland and Jack Goodrich.
Training at Yakima Sports Performance since middle school, Hargraves has added 275 pounds to his bench press and increased his vertical leap to 35 inches, attributes that have translated into greater agility and strength on both sides of the ball.
Beyond his own performance, he mentors younger players, rallying them during drills and sharing the lessons learned from his injury recovery, a role that has earned him respect across the locker room.
The senior also credits mentorship from Seth Woodcock during his sophomore year and the camaraderie built during offseason 7‑on‑7 competitions, all of which have prepared him for an every‑down role.
