The St. Louis Blues have officially named Sergei Zubov as an advisor to hockey operations, a move that underscores the franchise’s intent to blend veteran insight with modern strategy. The announcement comes as the team looks to deepen its analytical and developmental pipelines, drawing on Zubov’s rich history with the organization and the sport at large.
Zubov’s appointment follows a prior consulting engagement during the 2012‑13 season, a stint that already hinted at his compatibility with the club’s culture. His induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019 cemented his status among the game’s all‑time greats, a distinction that adds weight to his new advisory role.
Beyond his playing accolades, Zubov brings a résumé that spans continents and disciplines. After hanging up his skates in 2010, he transitioned into coaching, guiding teams in the KHL such as SKA Saint Petersburg, HK Sochi and Dinamo Riga, and even mentoring the Russian U‑20 side in 2021‑22. His tenure as senior consultant for the Dallas Stars in 2019 further refined his strategic outlook, preparing him for this expanded advisory capacity with the Blues.
General manager Alex Steen praised the hire, highlighting Zubov’s “extensive resume and coaching experience” as assets that will complement the club’s hockey operations department. Steen noted that the organization values the depth of knowledge Zubov carries, from his two Stanley Cup championships to his international coaching stints.
Zubov’s on‑ice legacy includes 1,068 regular‑season games with the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Dallas Stars, where he captured Stanley Cups in 1994 with the Rangers and 1999 with the Stars. Those championships, coupled with his Hall of Fame induction, provide a narrative of resilience and excellence that the Blues hope to channel into future successes.
