A Hall of Fame Coach Takes on a New Role
The St. Louis Blues revealed this week that Sergei Zubov will serve as an advisor to hockey operations, a move that underscores the organization’s intent to blend veteran insight with modern strategy. The announcement comes as the team looks to sharpen its competitive edge after a season of transition.
Zubov’s appointment is not a fresh start but a continuation of a relationship that began in 2012‑13 when he first returned to the NHL as a team consultant for the Blues. His reputation as a thoughtful analyst and mentor has grown steadily since his retirement from playing in 2010.
Since hanging up his skates, the Russian defenseman has built a robust coaching résumé abroad. He guided SKA Saint Petersburg to the head‑coach position in 2015‑16 after stints as an assistant with several KHL clubs, including HK Sochi and Dinamo Riga. In 2021‑22 he also took charge of the Russian U‑20 national team, further honing his developmental philosophy.
Zubov’s North American experience resurfaced in 2019 when he was named senior consultant to hockey operations for the Dallas Stars, a role that deepened his understanding of franchise management and player personnel decisions. His diverse background — spanning championship‑winning playing days, KHL leadership, and NHL advisory work — positions him uniquely to contribute to the Blues’ strategic vision.
Team executives say the hire reflects a desire to infuse the organization with a global perspective while leveraging Zubov’s proven ability to develop talent at multiple levels. As the Blues navigate roster construction and tactical evolution, his presence is expected to bridge the gap between on‑ice performance and front‑office planning.
