The St. Louis Blues have named former NHL defenseman Sergei Zubov as an advisor to hockey operations, a move that underscores the franchise’s intent to blend veteran insight with modern strategy.
A Hall of Fame Career and a Return to the Blues
Zubov’s 16‑year NHL career spanned the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Dallas Stars, where he amassed 89 points in 78 games during his sophomore season and contributed 19 playoff points en route to a Stanley Cup in 1994. The Rangers drafted him in the fifth round of the 1990 draft, and he later captured a second Cup with Dallas in 1999 before retiring.
His post‑playing years have been marked by a series of coaching and advisory roles. After a stint as a consultant with the Blues during the 2012‑13 season, he served as a senior advisor for the Dallas Stars in 2019‑20 before returning to the KHL, where he has held head‑coach positions at SKA St. Petersburg, HK Sochi and Dinamo Riga.
Most recently, Zubov guided Traktor Chelyabinsk as an assistant coach and briefly led HK Sochi in the 2024‑25 season before being dismissed in the spring. The Blues hope his extensive experience, both in North America and abroad, will inform player development and strategic planning.
The appointment also brings Andrei Nazarov, another veteran figure, into the advisory mix, suggesting a broader effort to enrich the team’s hockey operations with seasoned perspectives.
