A Season to Remember
The Sewickley Academy boys basketball team capped an unforgettable 2025‑26 campaign by capturing both the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) championship and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Class 2A state title. The victory marked the culmination of a 21‑game winning streak that saw the squad outscore opponents by an average margin of 15 points.
At the heart of the run were senior forward Lucas Grimsley, sophomore big man Mamadou Kane and versatile guard Caiden Battles. Grimsley, who finished his high school career with 1,100 points and a 3.7 GPA, earned the Coaches Award and announced his commitment to Kenyon College, where he will major in economics.
Kane’s dominant performance earned him the Class 2A state player of the year after he averaged 12.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He shot 46.8 percent from the field, including a 60 percent conversion rate on two‑point attempts and 41.4 percent from beyond the arc.
Battles, meanwhile, contributed a steady stream of playmaking and defensive intensity, while the supporting cast — including Adam Ikamba, Mike Iuzzolino, Amare Spencer, Justin Prunzik, Steve Phillips, Eli Grimsley, Leyland Grimsley and J.J. Thomas — provided depth throughout the season.
Looking Ahead to Class 4A
The accolades extended beyond the court. Grimsley’s 3.7 GPA and academic ambitions highlighted a rare combination of athletic and scholarly achievement, while Kane’s state player honor underscored his impact in the broader basketball community.
Coach Steve Phillips praised the team’s chemistry, noting that the blend of veteran leadership and youthful energy created a culture of accountability. “We built this program on hard work and belief,” he said, “and the results speak for themselves.”
The transition to Class 4A will test the team’s depth, but the foundation laid during the 2025‑26 season offers optimism. With Grimsley heading to Kenyon and Kane poised for a breakout year, the program aims to maintain its winning tradition while adapting to a more challenging schedule.
Community members and alumni have rallied around the team, anticipating that the recent successes will inspire the next generation of players. As the school year begins, the excitement is palpable, and the spotlight remains fixed on the talented roster that has put Sewickley on the basketball map.
