A Homegrown Coach Ready to Lead the Red Hawks
Shannon James has been appointed head football coach at Manchester High School, bringing a blend of professional experience and local roots to the program. The school announced his hiring this week, highlighting his extensive background as a player and coach.
James enjoyed a notable playing career that included stints in the National Football League with the Baltimore Ravens and in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He also earned All‑American honors at UMass and set rushing records at Bunnell High School before embarking on a coaching journey that began in the Manchester Pop Warner ranks.
His coaching résumé includes years as an assistant defensive coordinator at Avon and East Catholic, as well as leadership of the Manchester Pop Warner program, which he guided to four New England titles. Those experiences have forged a strong bond with many of the current Red Hawks players, whom he has mentored since they were youngsters.
A Vision Built on Accountability and Fundamentals
James says his primary mission is to instill a culture of accountability and winning. He emphasizes mastering the fundamentals, breaking down the game for his athletes, and preparing them for success both on and off the field. "We want them to hold each other accountable and embrace the grind," he explained.
The Red Hawks are looking to rebound from a challenging season and capitalize on recent playoff appearances. Their season opener is slated for September 11 at a rival matchup against Enfield, a game that will serve as an early test of James’ system.
He believes the current staff is experienced and capable, and he is confident that if the players buy into his approach, they can become competitive in the coming weeks.
