The University of South Carolina Upstate has named Shaun Vandiver as its new assistant coach, slated to join the program ahead of the 2026‑27 campaign. The move brings a wealth of experience to the Spartans, as Vandiver arrives with nearly a quarter‑century of collegiate basketball experience.
A Proven Developer of Talent
Vandiver’s basketball journey began in earnest at the University of Colorado, where he earned two‑time First Team All‑Big Eight honors and later entered the NBA draft after a standout college career. Selected 25th overall by the Golden State Warriors in 1991, he launched a professional playing stint overseas, a path that would later inform his coaching philosophy.
Over the past two decades, Vandiver has built a résumé that spans a series of coaching positions at institutions including Weber State, the University of Wyoming, Emporia State, Northern Colorado, Bowling Green, Boise State and his alma mater Colorado. Each stop has allowed him to refine his approach to player development and program building.
Head coach Marty Richter, who has led the Upstate program for several seasons, highlighted Vandiver’s depth of knowledge and his proven ability to mentor student‑athletes. “Shaun’s experience across multiple levels of the game gives us a unique advantage,” Richter said in the announcement.
The administration believes Vandiver’s blend of former player insight, extensive coaching background, and Hall of Fame pedigree will accelerate the Spartans’ growth both on and off the court. His appointment signals a commitment to elevating the program’s competitive edge while fostering holistic development among its roster.
Fans and alumni alike are eager to see how Vandiver’s strategic vision will translate into tangible results, with early indications suggesting a focus on disciplined defense and player empowerment.
