USC Upstate announced the hiring of Shaun Vandiver to its men's basketball coaching staff for the upcoming 2026‑27 season, a move confirmed by head coach Marty Richter.
Vandiver, a veteran of nearly a quarter‑century in college basketball, brings a blend of playing and coaching experience that spans multiple Division I programs.
He previously served as an assistant at Weber State before returning to the role at the same institution for the 2025‑26 campaign, and before that he helped guide Wyoming to the 2022 NCAA Tournament as an assistant coach.
His coaching résumé also includes a seven‑year tenure as head coach at Emporia State, stints at Northern Colorado, Bowling Green, Boise State, Colorado and Wyoming, and a playing career at Colorado that earned him two‑time First Team All‑Big Eight honors and a place in the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame.
Vandiver’s professional basketball journey began when the Golden State Warriors selected him with the 25th overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft, after which he launched a lengthy overseas career.
Richter praised Vandiver as an elite coach whose background bridges high‑level college and professional basketball, saying the new hire is poised to help the Spartans make another leap forward in their third year under his leadership.
A veteran presence returns to Spartanburg
The addition of Vandiver is expected to reinforce the program’s development trajectory, building on the seven‑game win improvement and the first ten‑plus home victories recorded in the 2022‑23 season.
Fans and alumni alike are eager to see how his extensive network and proven leadership will translate into on‑court success for the Upstate Spartans.
