A career defined by championships
After fourteen years at the helm of New Palestine High School’s baseball program, Shawn Lyons announced his retirement, closing a chapter that saw the Dragons compile a 286‑129 record and capture seven sectional crowns.
The milestone‑laden career also featured four sectional titles in the last five years, five regional championships, and a string of Elite Eight appearances that kept the team among the state’s elite.
Legacy and community impact
Lyons’ squads earned three Hoosier Heritage Conference championships and produced a parade of Indiana All‑Stars and All‑State players, including standout alumnus Al Cooper, who credits the coach for his development.
Before becoming head coach, Lyons spent more than a decade as an assistant, contributing to the program’s foundation and helping the team claim the 2004 state championship and finish as runners‑up in 2003.
School officials praised Lyons for his dedication, noting that his leadership not only built a winning culture but also strengthened community ties and inspired future generations of players.
