The annual North‑South All‑Star Game brought together the state’s top rising seniors for a tightly contested showcase, ending with a 2‑0 win for the South.
A Late Surge Defines the All‑Star Contest
Four athletes from Shelby County — Taylor Mathews, Charli Gantt, Marley Brown and Mackenzie Varden — took the field for the North, each logging meaningful minutes and contributing shots as the game unfolded.
The decisive moments arrived late in the match, when JK Longnecker opened the scoring in the 74th minute and Olivia Leathers doubled the lead in the 78th, the latter assisted by Longnecker.
Defensively, Marley Brown served as the anchor of a backline that posted 21 clean sheets and conceded just nine goals, while Charli Gantt proved a dual threat, tallying 17 goals and 16 assists for Thompson.
Offensively, Mathews closed the season with 15 goals and six assists across 14 appearances, and Varden earned All‑State and All‑Metro Honorable Mentions for her performances.
Coaches and Honors
The North was coached by Rebecca Mercer and Tiffany Walker, while Bill Ferguson, in his final high school game before retirement, guided the South. Individual honors went to Loralei Wei, who captured North MVP after playing the full 80 minutes, and to Elsie Shirley, named South MVP.
