The Sheridan Hawks have unveiled a fresh coaching direction as the 2026‑27 campaign approaches. After three seasons at the helm, J.J. Santagata is set to leave the program for a new role in Springfield, Illinois, creating an opening for Todd McIlrath to assume the head‑coach position.
A new era behind the bench
McIlrath, who spent three years at Bowling Green State University and logged professional minutes in the All‑American Hockey League and with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL, brings a blend of collegiate and minor‑league experience to the bench. He will be joined by Drew Carlson, a former Iowa State player who has accumulated seven years of coaching experience across various levels.
Santagata’s departure marks the end of a productive era; during his tenure he guided the Hawks to a first‑place finish in the NA3HL Frontier Division and helped shape the development of numerous junior prospects.
Season opener details
The team’s schedule kicks off on September 11 with a road game in Rapid City, followed by a home opener against Bozeman on September 25. Both games will serve as the first tests of the new coaching staff’s preparations.
Beyond the local slate, the Hawks will compete within the ECHL’s structure, a league positioned as the third tier of professional hockey and a common feeder for the AHL and NHL. The organization hopes the added professionalism of its coaching staff will translate into stronger performances on the ice.
Looking ahead
With the new staff in place, the Hawks aim to build on last season’s momentum and push for a deeper playoff run. The blend of McIlrath’s playing background and Carlson’s coaching acumen is expected to bring a fresh tactical edge to the team.
