Sherrard High School in Illinois has called off the remainder of its varsity football season, a decision that will affect the five senior players who were slated to lead the team this year.
School officials, including Principal Alex Johnson and head coach Zach Weigel, cited a dwindling pool of eligible varsity‑ready athletes and the heightened risk of injuries and burnout that would come from forcing players to fill multiple positions each week.
Honoring the Seniors
The upcoming Friday night matchup against Orion will serve as a special tribute to those seniors, who will be recognized with traditions that celebrate their contributions to the program.
With the varsity schedule halted, the school will concentrate on junior varsity competition for the rest of the season and is already planning a return to varsity play next year, aiming to rebuild a healthier and more sustainable roster.
