A Louisville youth baseball league known as Germantown Baseball was taken aback when it learned it would receive a $70,000 contribution from Shirley's Way, far surpassing the modest $5,000 it had anticipated.
Founded more than seven decades ago, the league has been a staple for Louisville families, offering a place for children to learn the game while fostering neighborhood ties. Over the years, the organization has wrestled with aging facilities and limited fundraising capacity.
The unexpected gift will be directed toward urgent repairs such as roof replacement and telephone pole upgrades, as well as longer‑term improvements that will keep the fields safe and playable for years to come.
A community rallying behind the game
Mike Mulrooney, the founder of Shirley's Way, said he was proud to support an institution that has shaped generations of local players. Steve Brown, a board member of Germantown Baseball, described the donation as transformational for the league’s future.
Shirley Brown, who helped spearhead the effort, stressed that sustained community backing is essential to keep the organization alive and thriving.
For many parents, the league represents more than a place to swing a bat; it is a gathering spot where friendships form and children gain confidence, making the recent infusion of resources especially meaningful.
With the new funding, the league aims to secure its facilities, attract new participants, and continue its mission of providing a wholesome environment for the next generation of ballplayers.
