A Rapid Rise
The Shoreham-Wading River girls flag football team made history this spring, capturing the Long Island Class C championship in their very first season of competition.
The team dismantled the Nassau County champion Cold Spring Harbor squad 46-7 in the title game, a performance that underscored their rapid adaptation to the sport.
Junior quarterback Shealyn Varbero was the engine of the offense, rushing for 80 yards and throwing for 159 yards with four touchdown passes, while also intercepting a pass and returning it for a score.
Receivers Ashley Morello and Brenna Molinelli each found the end zone through Varbero’s throws, and Mia Mangano added a rushing touchdown, illustrating a balanced attack that left opponents scrambling.
Head coach Bob DeSilva praised the squad’s quick learning curve and relentless dedication, noting that the players embraced the playbook with a professionalism unexpected from a first‑year program.
The championship has set the stage for a showdown with undefeated Section I Westlake on June 6 at Cortland High School, where a win would propel the team into the New York State finals.
Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., and the matchup promises to test whether the newcomers can sustain their momentum against a team that has yet to taste defeat.
