The Shoulder Check Showcase is set to return to Fairfield, Connecticut, this July, bringing together NHL, AHL and other professional hockey players for a distinctive off‑season gathering that blends sport with a powerful social message.
The initiative was born from personal tragedy: Rob Thorsen, a co‑founder, turned his grief after losing his son Hayden Thorsen in 2022 into a community‑wide effort to encourage people to check in on one another and to raise awareness for mental wellness.
A Circle of Support
Before each game, players form a circle on the ice and place a hand on the shoulder of the teammate beside them, a simple gesture that has become a visual reminder of solidarity, kindness and the importance of looking out for each other.
The 2026 showcase will feature a star‑studded roster that includes Trevor Zegras, Chris Kreider and Spencer Knight, among several other top‑level athletes who have volunteered their time to support the cause.
Participation is entirely voluntary; each player covers their own expenses and dedicates a portion of their summer to the event, viewing it as an opportunity to give back and to model empathy for fans of all ages.
The growth of the showcase has been propelled by word of mouth, with high school and college teams across the region adopting the shoulder‑check tradition in their own programs, thereby extending the mission beyond the ice.
Scheduled for July 30 at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, the event will also draw attention to nearby Stamford, where local youth hockey organizations such as Mid Fairfield Youth Hockey and Prentiss Performance have become integral partners in its execution.
Fans can expect a night filled with high‑caliber skill, scoring chances and memorable moments, all underscored by a shared commitment to fostering a culture of support and community outreach.
