Shoulder Check Showcase Returns to Sacred Heart Arena, Honoring Hayden Thorsen

Professional hockey event blends competition with mental health advocacy

A New Home for a Growing Tradition

The Shoulder Check Showcase, a professional ice‑hockey exhibition that blends high‑level competition with a family‑friendly pre‑game experience, will take place on July 30 at Sacred Heart University’s Martire Family Arena in Fairfield, Connecticut.

Originally launched in 2023 to honor the memory of 16‑year‑old Darien native Hayden Thorsen, the event uses the sport’s platform to encourage small, actionable steps toward mental‑health awareness, with participants signing a Shoulder Check pledge.

This year’s edition marks the first time the showcase moves from its longtime venue at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford, bringing a larger arena capacity and a fresh atmosphere for the growing roster of NHL, AHL and PWHL athletes who are expected to compete.

Among the confirmed participants are several of the sport’s rising stars, including Trevor Zegras, Chris Kreider, Adam Fox, Brett Pesce, Spencer Knight, Matt Rempe, Shayne Gostisbehere, Shane Pinto, Will Smith, Ryan Leonard, Mason McTavish, Cutter Gauthier, J.T. Miller, Pavel Dorofeyev, Matty Beniers, Denver Barkey, Frank Vatrano and John Hayden.

The relocation also underscores the event’s expanding partnership with key hockey institutions such as the National Hockey League, the American Hockey League and the Premier Hockey Federation, all of which are lending their support to the mental‑health initiative.
