A Transcontinental Path
Shunya Sakai grew up in Japan, where his love for soccer took root early. At thirteen he entered the academy of Omiya Ardija, a club that would later become part of Red Bull’s global network.
In August 2024 Red Bull completed the purchase of Omiya Ardija, and Sakai seized the opportunity to turn professional within the Red Bull ecosystem. He signed with Red Bull New York II, marking his first move abroad despite leaving his home country behind.
Having represented Japan at every youth level, including a first senior national team call‑up at the U15 stage, Sakai brings an international perspective to his new environment. He credits Red Bull’s philosophy for shaping his approach to training and competition.
Off the pitch, Sakai offers guidance to youngsters dreaming of playing overseas: patience, adaptability and a resilient mindset are as crucial as technical skill.
