In Simi Valley, a high school football coach, Adam Brubaker, was terminated from Royal High School after a video emerged showing him unintentionally striking a student in the groin with a football during a practice session.
The footage, which surfaced just hours before the team's season‑opening game, captured the moment the ball slipped from Brubaker's kick and made contact with the athlete's lower abdomen, causing immediate pain and raising concerns among parents and staff.
Brubaker, who expressed remorse, told school officials that the kick was accidental and that his frustration had been sparked by a separate incident in which a player had violently pulled another teammate to the ground during a drill, a move he said was prohibited.
The Simi Valley Unified School District conducted its own review and concurred with the school's decision to remove Brubaker from his position, citing a duty to protect student‑athletes and preserve the integrity of the program.
In the wake of the dismissal, the district announced that Cody MacArthur, a longtime assistant, would step in as the interim head coach, ensuring continuity for the varsity squad as they prepare for the remainder of the season.
The coaching vacancy on the school's football roster now stands empty, a visible reminder of the abrupt change that has left the program searching for stability both on and off the field.
