A Promising Defensive Addition
Simon Mullen, a 20‑year‑old defenceman from Shortts Lake, Nova Scotia, is set to wear the blue and gold of the UPEI Men’s Hockey Panthers for the 2026–27 campaign. The young blueliner arrives after a standout junior career that blended offensive flair with a responsible defensive mindset.
Mullen spent the last two seasons as captain of the Summerside Western Capitals, where he piled up 14 goals and 54 assists in 52 games. His leadership helped the club capture the 2026 Centennial Cup silver medal and earn him top defenceman honors in both the Maritime Junior Hockey League and the Canadian Junior Hockey League.
Beyond the local stage, Mullen was a key member of the Moncton Wildcats’ 2025 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League championship squad and added a silver medal with Canada East at the 2023 World Junior A Challenge. Those experiences have equipped him with a high‑IQ understanding of the game and a knack for moving the puck efficiently through all three zones.
Coaches have taken notice of his two‑way capabilities. Panthers head coach Forbes MacPherson described Mullen as a priority recruit, highlighting his competitiveness, size, and elite passing ability that can unlock opportunities for the team’s forwards. “His vision and ability to transition the puck from defence to offence will give our attack a new dimension,” MacPherson said.
Off the ice, Mullen is focused on growing both as a student and as a player, citing the supportive environment at UPEI as a major factor in his decision. He hopes to blend his championship pedigree with academic pursuits, aiming to contribute to the program’s resurgence in the Atlantic division.
The addition of a player who has tasted success at the provincial, national, and junior‑A levels signals an ambitious step for the Panthers as they look to rebuild momentum.
