Southern Illinois University’s football program has slated a marquee non‑conference matchup for the 2027 season, announcing that it will host Western Kentucky on August 28, 2027, at Houchens Industries‑L.T. Smith Stadium in Carbondale.
The game represents a reunion with a Gateway Conference rival that the Salukis last faced a decade ago, a series that sits at 6‑9 in SIU’s all‑time ledger, with a balanced home record of 3‑3 against the Hilltoppers.
A Historic Reunion on the Gridiron
Western Kentucky, now competing in the Sun Belt Conference after stints in Conference USA, previously captured the 2002 Division I‑AA national title under coach Jack Harbaugh, a milestone that still resonates in the program’s history.
For SIU, the 2027 slate is designed to test the team against two FBS opponents, the first being WKU and the second a showdown with Wisconsin two weeks later, underscoring the Salukis’ ambition to measure themselves against top‑tier competition.
Head coach Nick Hill, who took the reins in 2016, has already logged victories over three FBS programs — Northern Illinois, Northwestern and UMass — demonstrating a rapid ascent that began with a narrow loss at Florida Atlantic in his debut season.
The season opener will also be streamed live on ESPN+, giving fans a chance to follow the Salukis’ early test against the Hilltoppers before the Wisconsin clash.
Beyond the 2027 schedule, SIU continues to build on its recent Gateway Conference championship pedigree, having tied for titles in 2003 and 2005 and captured the outright crown in 2004 under coach Jerry Kill, whose tenure helped cement the program’s reputation for resilience.
