A Historic Run for the Cougars
As the No. 1 seed, the Cougars earned a first‑round bye and will meet the winner of the Southern Indiana versus Little Rock clash, scheduled for Wednesday night, in Thursday’s championship game.
The road to the title has been historic; SIUE captured its first OVC regular‑season championship last Thursday, finishing the year with a program‑best 32 victories and a ten‑game winning streak that stands as the longest in the Division I era.
That success is reflected in the numbers: the Cougars smashed the single‑season home‑run record with 67 RBIs from Ryan Niedzwiedz, who also leads the league and sits fifth nationally with 27 homers, while Mack Mitchell ranks third in the league with 17 round‑trippers.
The offensive onslaught produced a single‑game school record of nine homers on March 20 at Morehead State, and the team logged 104 conference homers, placing them 11th in the NCAA and tops in the OVC with a .518 slugging percentage.
Individual accolades followed: Ryan Niedzwiedz earned the program’s inaugural Player of the Year honor, Sean Lyons was named Coach of the Year, and seven players collected All‑OVC selections, including first‑team standouts Niedzwiedz, Chase Bloomer, Tim Teixeira and Easton Harris.
