SIUE Women’s Basketball Secures Transfer Riley Abney for 2026‑27 Season

The Cougars add a versatile guard after a standout year at Schoolcraft College, bolstering their roster ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s women’s basketball program continues to reshape its roster for the 2026‑27 season, confirming the addition of guard Riley Abney. The move was announced by head coach Samantha Quigley Smith, who highlighted the player’s shooting skill set and competitive drive as key assets for the Cougars.

A Guard With Proven Scoring Touch

Abney arrives after a standout season at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan, where she averaged 12.5 points per game while also contributing 3.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.6 steals per contest. Her ability to hit from long range and create scoring opportunities made her the third‑leading scorer on her team and a reliable option in clutch moments.

The guard’s journey to the Cougars includes a freshman year at Oakland University, where she saw limited action for the Golden Grizzlies in the Horizon League. Prior to college, Abney excelled at Brandon High School in Ortonville, Michigan, earning three All‑State selections from the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan and being named Flint Area Player of the Year after surpassing the 1,000‑point milestone.

Abney will be the third offseason transfer to join the Cougars, following the arrivals of Giselle Dogan and Pryelle Kesse‑Beda. The program also secured four early signees in November — Brooke Blakenship, Jayla McClinton, Alex Nicastro and Taylor Trame — signaling a comprehensive effort to build depth and competitiveness.

The Cougars’ recent on‑court success provides a promising backdrop for these additions. After finishing the 2025‑26 season with 16 victories and advancing to the second round of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament, the team looks to maintain momentum and contend for a conference title in the upcoming campaign.
