A Statewide Tribute
Governor Jeff Landry announced that the United States flag and the Louisiana state flag will be lowered to half‑staff on Monday and Tuesday as a mark of respect for Skip Bertman, the longtime architect of LSU’s baseball dynasty.
Bertman, who took the helm of the LSU program in 1983, guided the Tigers to five national championships by 2001, turning a relatively obscure team into a powerhouse that captured the imagination of college baseball fans across the country.
The coach died at the age of 88 after a brief hospitalization for a heart‑related condition, leaving behind a legacy that extends beyond trophies to the countless players and assistants who credit him with shaping their careers.
A private gathering for family and former players will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, followed by a public celebration of life at 7 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge.
The ceremony will be streamed live on ESPN+, as well as on LSU’s official YouTube and Facebook channels, allowing fans worldwide to join the tribute.
In his statement, Governor Landry highlighted Bertman’s impact on college baseball and his enduring influence off the field, noting that the flag‑half‑staff directive reflects the state’s gratitude for a man who ‘redefined excellence in the sport.’
