Skip Bertman, who steered the LSU Tigers baseball program for nearly two decades, is remembered as much for his strategic brilliance as for the culture of excellence he cultivated within the team and the university community.
A winning formula
During his 18‑year tenure, Bertman guided the Tigers to five national titles, a feat that placed him among the most decorated coaches in collegiate baseball history. Each championship run was built on a blend of disciplined recruiting, innovative scouting and a relentless emphasis on fundamentals.
His teams also earned 11 trips to the College World Series, each appearance underscoring a consistency that few programs have matched. Those deep postseason runs not only amplified LSU’s national profile but also forged a pipeline of talent that would later star in Major League Baseball.
A new chapter
After stepping down from the dugout, Bertman accepted the mantle of LSU athletic director, where he now oversees a broad portfolio that includes facilities, compliance and student‑athlete development. In this expanded role, he continues to shape the university’s athletic identity, ensuring that the standards he set on the field translate into sustained success across all sports.
