The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team dropped an 8‑2 decision to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Tuesday, yet the loss was enough to lock in a fourth consecutive berth in the Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championships. The Skyhawks outhit the Cougars 11‑10, a testament to a potent offense that refused to be silenced.
Grines Leads the Charge
TJ Grines continued his hot streak, recording his ninth straight multi‑hit game. He finished with three hits, a home run and a stolen base, marking his tenth homer of the season in the opening inning. His timely bat set the tone early and kept the Skyhawks within striking distance.
Garner Anderson also contributed three base knocks, including a double and a stolen base, while Andrew Lawrence drove in a run and drew a walk. Both players added depth to a lineup that collectively amassed eleven hits.
Sitton’s Six‑Inning Masterclass
Jacob Sitton delivered a solid outing, striking out six batters over seven innings and retiring the first six Cougars he faced. He finished the day with four consecutive scoreless innings, keeping the game close before SIUE pulled ahead in the eighth.
The Cougars seized the lead in the home half of the third, but the Skyhawks answered in the fifth when Lawrence’s single to left plated Anderson, narrowing the gap to three runs. Despite the rally, SIUE added insurance in the bottom of the eighth and closed out the ninth to win Game 1.
