A Historic First for Sled Hockey
The 2026 Amerigol LATAM Cup marked a milestone in the tournament’s eight‑year history by debuting sled hockey, offering exhibition games and instructional clinics that highlighted the sport’s growing reach.
Organizers framed the showcase as more than a novelty; they described it as a catalyst for countries to develop sled hockey programs with an eye toward future Paralympic competition.
Karina Villegas, a Venezuelan native and member of USA Hockey’s U.S. Women’s Development Sled Hockey Team, praised the inclusion, noting how the event provides a visible platform for athletes who often train in obscurity.
Greg Shaw, a two‑time Paralympic gold medalist, said seeing sled hockey on display was a powerful reminder of the sport’s potential to inspire new participants and nations.
Madeleine Gallagher, the 2025 World Para Hockey Women’s Champion, pointed out that women’s sled hockey remains absent from the Paralympic program due to limited global participation, underscoring the need for broader adoption.
The exhibition also resonated with coaches and athletes outside the elite sphere; Dave Kodner, a Special Olympics coach, admitted initial awkwardness but left motivated to try the sport himself.
Corporate Backing
The NHL and the NHL Players’ Association have backed the LATAM Cup through the NHL Industry Growth Fund, while the Florida Panthers contributed additional support, signaling corporate commitment to the tournament’s inclusive vision.
