Baseball in the western reaches of North Dakota has long been more than a pastime; it is a lifeline for towns where population decline and scarce funding threaten the future of youth sports.
In Belfield and the neighboring community of South Heart, Ian Silbernagel and his father Kurt Silbernagel take the field each evening after Kurt finishes his day job, coaching the local Legion team that bears their name. When the regional Little League and Babe Ruth programs faded, Kurt stepped in to launch new leagues, ensuring that kids still had a place to play.
Further east, Nolan Dix has spent a decade steering the Hettinger baseball program, learning to adapt schedules and field conditions to keep players motivated despite the town’s shrinking roster.
A Legacy of Continuity in Dickinson
Pete Dobitz, who has coached baseball in Dickinson for nearly three decades, blends his Little League roots with a high‑school‑level vision, guiding many of today’s teenagers through the same drills he once taught them as children.
Dickinson’s program, though classified as a small Class A school in the Western Dakota Association, has captured three state championships, a testament to sustained coaching and community support.
Ryan Crossingham, head coach of the Roughriders’ Legion squad, notes that Dickinson’s teams often enter tournaments with a competitive edge over larger eastern opponents, a reflection of the town’s deep‑seated baseball culture.
The success of these programs is anchored in partnerships with local posts of the American Legion, such as Belfield/South Heart Post 144, which provides organizational structure and access to resources that would otherwise be unavailable.
