A Strategic Vision
At a July 15, 2026 news conference, SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee stood alongside quarterback Kevin Jennings, outlining the roadmap that the Mustangs must follow to re‑enter the College Football Playoff.
Lashlee identified four non‑negotiable pillars: a marked increase in on‑field competitiveness, sustained dominance in the SEC West, resolution of the program’s historic playoff drought, and a foundation of long‑term financial stability.
Recent victories have already begun to shift the team’s trajectory, while an aggressive recruiting push is expected to deepen the talent pool and raise the level of play.
The coach emphasized that merely winning games is insufficient; the Mustangs must consistently finish atop the SEC West to earn the conference’s automatic playoff berth.
Past failures to break through have left a psychological scar, and Lashlee said the program is employing new strategies — both on the field and in the locker room — to rewrite that narrative.
Beyond X’s and O’s, the coach underscored that fiscal health is the engine that will keep the ambitious plan moving forward, ensuring that facilities, scholarships and staffing can keep pace with on‑field aspirations.
