SMU's men's soccer program is gearing up for the 2026 season with a wave of fresh talent and a key returnee.
Coach Kevin Hudson highlighted the blend of youth and experience among the eight newcomers, noting how the mix should add depth and versatility.
A Revamped Roster
The roster will feature five freshmen and three transfers, each bringing distinct strengths — from defensive solidity to midfield dynamism.
Among the additions, defender Owen Zarnick will return after a medical hardship waiver, having logged 46 starts and 22 clean sheets over four seasons.
Zarnick’s presence is expected to anchor a backline that also welcomes Sam Cunniffe, a Massachusetts native who contributed seven goals and four assists last season with the U19 Boston Bolts.
Midfield will be bolstered by Tweneboa “Bingo” Kodua, who transfers from Oral Roberts, while Ryder Balch arrives from Trophy Club, Texas, after helping Solar Soccer Club reach the U19 ECNL semifinals.
Defensive reinforcements also include Sam Miller, named to the Oregon First Team All‑State, and Max Sauceda, a three‑time MLS Next National Academy Championship All‑Star selectee.
Goalkeeping depth adds Micah Ramirez, formerly the starter at Western Illinois, and Dunes Nielsen, a transfer from Utah Tech who earned Second Team All‑Western Athletics Conference honors.
Fullback Joseluis Villagomez joins from El Paso, Texas, a 2025 ECNL Conference Player of the Year, rounding out a versatile defensive lineup.
The upcoming schedule promises ten home matches, including four conference games, with the season opener against Stetson set for August 20 on the Hilltop.
Coach Hudson emphasized that the new signings will not only fortify the defense but also inject energy into the midfield and attack, setting the stage for a competitive campaign.
