A Community Rallies Behind Burned-Out Soccer Pub
A blaze erupted at The Black Sheep, a beloved soccer‑watching bar in Center City Philadelphia, early on a Saturday night, leaving the interior gutted by flame, smoke and water. The fire reignited after initial containment, causing extensive damage that may keep the pub shuttered for months.
Owner James Stephens, alerted by a bartender who first noticed the smoke, rushed to the scene and watched as the flames flared again, destroying years of memorabilia and custom brews he had prepared for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Hope Amid the Ashes
The loss is especially felt as the venue had become a hub for fans gearing up for the World Cup, with Stephens having curated special beers for each competing nation. In response, the Philadelphia Manchester United Supporters' Club launched a GoFundMe, a move that reflects the deep ties between the bar and its regulars, including longtime patron Kim Haggert, who described the outpouring as moving.
James Stephens and his daughter Emily Stephens have expressed gratitude for the community’s support, noting that the emotional response fuels their determination to rebuild and eventually reopen the pub before the next major soccer tournament.
