A Weekend of Community Celebration
This week Columbia’s streets and venues are alive with a string of events that bring neighbors together, from the rhythm of Latin music to the clash of hockey sticks on the ice. Each gathering offers a distinct flavor of the city’s vibrant culture, promising something for every age and interest.
Latin Flavors Light Up Main Street
On Saturday, August 22, Main Street’s blocks 1300 and 1400 transform into a lively corridor of sound and scent. The Main Street Latin Festival returns, running from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m., and invites visitors to sample authentic cuisine, enjoy live performances, and partake in family‑friendly activities — all without an admission fee. The festival’s energy captures the spirit of community, turning the downtown area into a celebration of heritage and togetherness.
Skating for a Cause
Later that same day, the Columbia Fire Department’s hockey squad faces off against their Myrtle Beach counterparts at Flight Adventure Park in Irmo. The charity game, scheduled for August 22, channels every donation toward the family of a Columbia Fire engineer whose child is battling illness. The matchup not only showcases athletic talent but also underscores the city’s commitment to supporting one of its own.
Comics Come Alive
The creative pulse of Soda City shifts to the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on August 22 and 23. Soda City Comic Con opens its doors from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, featuring more than 150 artists, vendors, and special guests. Attendees can explore a marketplace of comics, collectibles, and original artwork while meeting the creators behind the works.
Vintage Treasures at the Fairgrounds
From August 28 through 30, the state fairgrounds host Vintage Market Days, a three‑day showcase of handmade goods, clothing, treats, and activities designed for families. Operating hours run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first two days and conclude at 3 p.m. on the final day. Shoppers can wander among stalls brimming with unique items, enjoying a blend of craftsmanship and community spirit that caps off a month of local festivities.
