Puerto Rico celebrated a historic gold medal at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, with sophomore forward Sofia Muñoz at the center of the triumph.
In the championship game, Muñoz logged eight points, eight rebounds and three steals, helping secure the island’s place on the podium.
Her impact extended beyond the final, as she posted a tournament‑wide average of 9.2 points per game, highlighted by a 12‑point outing against the Dominican Republic in the semifinals.
Muñoz also recorded a double‑double with 10 points and 13 rebounds against Panama on July 27, and contributed 14 assists, eight steals and four blocks throughout the competition.
From UAB to Atlanta: A New Chapter
After a freshman season at UAB where she averaged 11.8 points per game and shot 47.1% from the field, Muñoz is set to join Georgia Tech for her sophomore year.
She previously led UAB in assists (124) and steals (40) and earned a reputation for versatility on both ends of the floor.
Yellow Jackets’ Outlook
Georgia Tech returns four primary starters from last season under head coach Karen Blair, who guided the team to a 10‑win campaign at McCamish Pavilion.
The Yellow Jackets added signature victories over No. 18 Notre Dame, Clemson, Stanford and Miami during the 2025‑26 season, setting the stage for a competitive run.
Muñoz’s arrival adds depth to a backcourt that already boasts experienced playmakers, and her defensive instincts could bolster the team’s perimeter pressure.
The upcoming season promises a fresh narrative as the Yellow Jackets blend returning talent with the dynamic contributions of a player who has already tasted international success.
