Mesilla Valley Christian School’s baseball team captured the New Mexico 2A state championship on May 15, delivering a 21‑0 victory over Hozho Academy that will be remembered as one of the most decisive title games in recent memory.
A 21‑0 rout in the state final
The SonBlazers exploded for 16 runs in the fourth inning, turning a modest early lead into a runaway that forced the game to end after five innings under the league’s 10‑run mercy rule. The final score of 21‑0 underscored the team’s dominance from start to finish.
Zach Beasley sparked the offense with an RBI triple in the third inning, while Benjamin Moreman followed with an RBI double and a balk that added to the growing tally. Poppy, Urijah Martes, Alekay Gomez, Cameron Evaro, Kaden Warner, Weston Marr, Damon Castillo and Donovan Azure‑Belt each contributed RBIs, while Poppy’s two‑inning stint on the mound paired with Beasley’s three‑inning relief to limit Hozho to just two hits.
The onslaught produced 16 hits for the SonBlazers, with Poppy, Moreman and Beasley each driving in three runs. The team’s 19‑0 lead after the fourth inning set the stage for two more runs in the fifth, sealing a 21‑0 final margin.
This victory marks the fifth baseball state title in Mesilla Valley Christian’s history and their first championship since 2018, a milestone that reflects years of steady program growth and community support. The SonBlazers finished the season with a 19‑3 record, the No. 4 seed overcoming the No. 3 seed Hozho Academy (20‑9) in the championship bout.
