A Historic Championship
When the final out was recorded on May 30, the roar that echoed across the diamond was more than just a victory over Montgomery High School; it marked the end of an 18‑year drought for the Sonoma Valley High School varsity baseball program.
The Dragons capped the season with a 5‑2 win that not only secured the North Coast Section Division 5 crown but also underscored a remarkable turnaround after a 6‑6 league slate and a 16‑12 overall record under head coach Sean Boisson and assistant Clay Dunkle.
Coaching and Player Highlights
Guided by Boisson and Dunkle, the team rallied from a modest start to string together a four‑game winning streak that began with a 9‑0 rout of Berean Christian High School and continued with hard‑fought victories over Healdsburg and Concord.
The championship game saw senior Colin Buckley named Vine Valley Athletic League MVP, while Cayden Waldrop earned First Team All‑League honors and junior Max Trexler secured a spot on the Second Team, reflecting the squad’s depth.
City Celebration
The city will honor the Dragons at the August 5 council meeting as part of the Celebrate Sonoma program, a ceremony that brings together families, fans and local leaders to celebrate the team’s achievement.
Beyond the trophy, the championship has sparked renewed enthusiasm for baseball throughout the valley, encouraging youth participation and reinforcing community pride.
