The University of South Carolina revealed on June 19 a comprehensive reshaping of its baseball coaching staff, appointing a group of veteran coaches who together bring a blend of championship experience and fresh perspectives.
A Fresh Coaching Landscape
Chad Oxendine, a former standout at Coastal Carolina and later a coach at Longwood University, joins as associate head coach, while Bill Cilento, celebrated for his hitting expertise at Wake Forest, takes on a similar role for the Gamecocks. Matt Williams, who guided Coastal Carolina’s pitchers to a College World Series runner‑up finish, will oversee the pitching staff. The new roster also features Tyler Shewmaker, who will handle recruiting and catching duties after stints at Coastal Carolina and Vanderbilt, and Dylan Eskew, a former Gamecock player now serving as director of pitching development.
Strategic Vision and Player Development
Matt Pepin, the program’s general manager and director of analytics, will integrate data‑driven strategies into player development, while Mickey Beach, formerly of Coastal Carolina and Longwood, will manage day‑to‑day baseball operations. Completing the staff, Michael Thomson brings a performance‑focused background from the Baltimore Orioles organization to the university’s strength and conditioning programs.
Head coach Kevin Schnall expressed confidence that the assembled team shares a common vision of player growth and competitive success, noting that the blend of analytical insight, on‑field expertise, and operational efficiency positions the program for sustained achievement.
